Task 38 - Fizzy

Part 1 - End In Tears by Ruth Rendell

Out of the five extracts I found this one the most appealing. I liked the way the author expresses the scenery and the detail it's been described. I also like the realism of it, the way that it's been written is such a way that it's believable, it doesn't go over the top with the story line to put the reader off and at the same time doesn't be so dull as to bore the reader. Some of the phrases which I think stood out most to me were: "A third minute passed. A fourth", "He hated anticlimaxes", "he saw for the first time the woman he had tried to kill".

Part 2 -

The sunset was somewhat less appealing today. It looked depressed almost. The scenery would have been amazing from up there, but it didn't seem to be so amazing when he wanted it to be anyway. It was around about 7.30, none of his watches are ever usually correct so he relied on the sun instead. H e had his eyes transfixed on the window now as if he knew what was to come. His finger was quickly becoming impatient resting on the cold metal.

He had time to think. H e always gave himself enough time to think before hand. He thought of a million things, not rushing but walking through his head, at a steady calm and relaxed speed. None of them were directly relevant to why he was up there on the roof of a 68 story building in the middle of Dubai city, but they were still thoughts which had some sort of significance to his life and only his. Nothing which really mattered to anyone else was on his mind.

"Click" he made an adjustment to one of the settings on the instrument.

He readied it; it was his time to perform. The audience took their place, he could see the audience vaguely through the window now, and frankly he wasn't certain, he just wanted it over and done with now. He positioned his fingers gently over the front control, at the back for balance and placed his chosen finger on the single key which would play his melody. The same melody he'd been playing for a long time now, in fact the only melody he ever played. It was this same melody he played some few days go but on a different roof top and at a different time, but the same melody nevertheless.

"...tick..." finally he fine tuned a knob on the top of the instrument which would allow him to get the most bull's-eye precision and accuracy.

At last he played.

"BOOM", the sound echoed through the air and floated around the atmosphere for a bit. The melody was heard by all but more importantly; felt by one. The effect was; the victim fell to the ground. There had always been a downside to the beauty of his music, there had always needed to be some sort of sacrifice, usually people he didn't even know. The show was almost over, except of course; the finale. This was a fairly straight forward and predictable act, yet he performed it with such skill that it never ceased to amaze; his finale: the most ingenious disappearing act.

Nearly Perfect

Part 1 -

I chose the 4th extract from the 5. Although it's a book from 1915, I found the text engaging and also found the description of the scene interesting. I especially enjoyed the metaphors used and the meaningful atmosphere they created. The text drew me in and I found it very good at producing images in my mind about what the characters felt and were doing. I also thought that he described the feelings of the characters, in particular the man, very well and bought life and realism to it all.

Nearly Perfect -

It was all so perfect, so exact, the optimum temperature and the optimum atmosphere. He knew it as did I, it was the right time and the right place. The creature that thumped within my chest knocked on my rib cage as if to signal “yes”. I looked at him and saw a change; he looked so different all of a sudden. It was as if he’d suddenly been imported from within a utopia. His movements were so subtle that I hardly noticed yet mine moved in sequence, although I had not much control over them, his movements requested and mine accepted.

I had had enough signals for me to take down my defense and I plunged deeper in to explore the thick, zeal filled, ambiance. I could now feel more than ever his lips touched mine and the reaction let loose a steroid which instantly boosted my sense of touch in every cell. Silence was now the only music that played. I sank into his arms and rested as a bird in her nest. My head felt the comfort of his chest and my arms the warmth of his. Every hair on his body dug into me, gripped my skin and ensured each tip of every hair paid its undivided attention into giving every particle it touched a sense of satisfaction, a seemingly everlasting connection of caressing delight.

His face lit up and brightened the room. He stared into my eyes and I dived into his. We were floating, suddenly transfixed in midair; I was transported to a different world and gradually back to actuality where he laid me down tenderly, onto a bed with a duvet made of perfumed red silk. I’d glided from the skies of paradise down to the grounds of earth; like a petal with an angel as a parachute to guard me safely onto a meadow of infinite passion.

Task 35

My chosen opening.

Out of the four options I chose the third opening, Dracula by Bram Stoker. I liked how Bram Stoker built a contrast between how much information he gave out about the scenes setting and atmosphere and how much information he let out on the actual scene and what was happening. I also liked how tension was built up; not much was told but at one point I could quite easily picture my self in the narrators position and see what was happening.

Do Lights Have Shadows?

It wasn’t too long before we found ourselves on a clearly deserted road; quite easy to tell it was deserted anyone could tell simply by looking for a source of light, there wasn’t any. Other than the full moon’s somewhat surprisingly bright light and my Golf GTI’s headlights (which now seemed to be either rapidly dimming or less effective for some reason) there weren’t any other luminous sources. To my left I had the person I had decided to travel with; my wife to be. Not very lively of course, she hadn’t made much of an attempt either, simply took the opportunity to fall fast asleep and snore repetitively at perfectly timed intervals (around 6 seconds). My only hope of any entertainment was the stereo, unfortunately I hadn’t quite mastered it yet, this meant I had to listen to whatever I got; a couple of tedious men who conversed about nothing significant.

My biggest fear at that moment was falling asleep, to such an extent that though blinking was inevitable it seemed nothing less than an ambition not to. What happened next can only be remembered as a vague memory. Fatigue overwhelmed me, yet I fought with all my might against it; a fight not worth fighting; as my efforts resulted in mere failure. I opened my eyes in a somewhat flustered motion. Still in panic; I struggled to pull the car back on track. Unaware at the time as to how long I had dozed off, I tried hard to make sense of whatever I could. I believe that perhaps it wasn’t by sheer indolence, but rather by accident, that I had committed this act which of whose outcomes I would scarcely remember. At first, once I’d relaxed slightly, I realized that the incident seemed to have gone without any consequence, yet something did still feel awkward, I concluded it was the silence. Why was there silence?

Task 34 - She Came She Divided She Conquered

Opening 10

I chose the tenth opening because I thought it was original and gripping. This opening had a different mood and tone to other openings and that's what I thought gave it its originality. Nothing was too rushed or too slow and much of what was said seemed rather relevant in setting the scene; I prefer text which is pithy, concise and a lot more straight to the point however not so much so that it becomes rushed.

She Came She Divided She Conquered:

It was so not my fault, not one bit. Seriously though, why blame me out of all the people? I'm an innocent child for god sakes. Trying to help has obviously become a crime over night hasn't it, or a more likely thing: I've been trapped in a grown up trap where they can't blame each other because it's everybody's fault, so hey let's blame the innocent one.

Not much was as it seemed that day; looks were certainly proving to be deceiving. Quite unexpected I guess. I didn't know what to say, she came through the door in a skirt and a, well a top I suppose; looked more like an inaccurately cut piece of fabric if you ask me. Her hair was tied up in a bun at the back of her head, perhaps her attempt to look elegant? I could tell immediately, without her having to say a word, it was safe for me to call her a "freshy". The amount of make up was incredible; it was as if she'd just got booted out from a fucking circus. She didn't seem like the woman/girl (I didn't know how old she was yet) that he'd bring home. Maybe I was just too young to understand eh? Ha nar, that's just a common excuse grown-ups pick with when they know they're wrong.

Mary: from Hong-Kong apparently? I doubt any of that was true, I know for a fact her name was definitely not Mary, I mean come on cut the bullshit; she couldn't even speak English how the fuck could her name be Mary?

Dad put on one his famous pretend to be jolly moods and smiled away like a wind up toy. Once he’d got to introducing me he simply gave a few orders, not surprising I suppose, have to admit though I was a little optimistic.

“Faizan! Get the luggage, boil the kettle, lock up the car and close the door when you’re inside. She wants 2 and a half sugars with extra milk.”

He only ever said anything once, never repeated himself. He would of course wait a few seconds but if there was no reply then he’d use plan B; actions speak louder than words.

“… Ok” I done what I was instructed to do and he continued to perform his jolly tour guide role.

Once I’d got the luggage I noticed Mum looking on rather slyly and I decided to make a dangerous move and try and hold a conversation with her.

“Where dya want the bags?”
“… In the bin, go use your brain put them somewhere where they won’t get in the way”

And that was it, the failed attempt of a conversation with my mother. She always possessed a rather unique ability to take my mood right out of me punch it in the face, turn it upside down, inside out and put it back in me and all in a matter of seconds. Apparently it’s an ability all women have, lucky me? My mother had mastered it better than the rest.

My Best Friend

Best Friend

You are close. Like my clothes to my skin. You are mine.
We go together ever so perfectly right.
You are better than others. You're something different.
You're so pure and comforting to all. You're my light.

We share trust ever strong and long lasting.
Our love bond grows all strong and belong ever more.
We have problems of course. But no; split we do not.
More over of course best friend you see I adore.

You have said many things, meaning full they always
Bring me up when I'm down, raise my sky; never frown.
Shine so bright by my side. Never cease to amaze,
I can be this lands king, you my queen wear a crown.

Memories are rare but with you it's not so hard
to make what can't be made with whoever is not
even close to being you. I protect you. Protect
me from difficulties. You are what they are not.

Sorry {Intermediate}

Sorry

Perception, illusion and deception.
None uncommon, in fact; typical.
So unfortunate it's all still fiction.
It hurts to say 'I won't cry'; I'm in denial.
I'll never know where I made my mistake.
Perhaps it was loving you; That was not
a choice though; not a choice for me to make.
Inevitable, yet still; an unknown plot.
If Love's a game; I'm certainly long lost.
You were a star; restricted, hidden star;
Eclipsed forever. Warmth: extinct, in frost.
Your memory; forever there; a scar.
I'm sorry, sorry still; perhaps, maybe
I've made you feel, only slightly, guilty.

Forgotten [Beginner]

Somethings I can't forget; the love we had.
I always thought the love we had was true.
Somethings however, look more good than bad,
My life's mistake remains that I and you,
Had never quite managed to pull ourselves
over and through our difficulties. But
now that is; upon thy towering shelves;
another forgotten memory, a cut,
one; surrounded by many others. I know,
even though I should have long forgotten, none
accompany me here, I live solo.
you played a part in the worst assumption;
the most haunting, annoying assumption.
I'm still trying to leave it: forgotten.

Distance

Sonnet

I once was sure i loved you too; I did.
I undoubtedly dreamt of me, you and
The moon; on some lonely side street. A quid
I gave you, and you used your skilfull hand
to give me one very professional
Blow job; oh god forbid. It was indeed
only a dream. I loved you then I might
still do; depends on me and my small need.
Our future doesn't seem to be bright
Maybe because you are so many miles
Away from me. My love is not easy
to come across; it very rarely smiles.
Baby please don't, please don't forget; angry
is not something i intend for you to
feel towards me. Distance I can't undo.

____________________________________________________

Part 2

  • Outside The Window

The train goes by on noisy tracks. It is

a train of few spiders walking swiftly.

  • What I'd like to eat

I feel very peckish indeed tonight;

for birds require a peck or two a night.

  • A recent dream

The stars had shone so bright and glowed so close

because i was an astronaut in space.

  • Annoying tasks overdue

Forgetfulness reminds me that I have

to do my chores before i go to bed.

  • My body

My teeth restrained by metal rods; begin

to irritate me by seeming ugly.

Destiny? (Leyton Orient Day)

Destiny?

Candifloss and marshmallows
Don't go so well,
With raisons and pistashios.
Perhaps they arn't meant to be?

Orange juice and cranberry
Don't go so well,
with our tea and coffee.
Perhaps there's a reason indeed?

Love and friendship
Don't go so well,
With enemies and hatred.
Perhaps they don't go so well
Because maybe there is such a thing
as fate or destiny?

Expectations... (Leyton Orient day)

Expectations

Somewhere on the outskirts of London;
A middle aged single mother appears to be shouting
at her son
Noise continuously erupting from around the small
bungalow.
But none of it matters, not really, why should it?

Somewhere on the outskirts of London;
A mother expresses her anger to her son.
Words full of meaning rapidly rush
from her fast paced, vicious mouth.

"I have been blessed by God with 4 sons
However, you, my eldest one,
The single most relied one,
Are definitely; the most dissapointing one!"

Appearances can certainly be deceaving,
Not many can tell how another's feeling.
Him, he appears to be without a worry
In the world, in his (own) world,
Never seems to be in any sort of a hurry
And appears to ignore everything he's told.

"If, mother, you hadn't expected so much of me
Perhaps everything I do, or done, won't end so
very dissapointingly."

He spots a glimmering speck of a tear,
somwhere in a corner of her eye.
Thinks of the day and life, gone by.
Yet he knows it's never worth it, to cry.
So then he leaves. Just a pathetic coward,
With nothing left to say,
except, "Good Bye".

Task 26, Track 11

A Lovers View.

The soft grass swirled gently back and forth as the breezed pushed it into its desired direction. The trees randomly lost leaves hear and there and let them come fluttering down to the floor in a spiralling movement. In the middle of all this there stood something which had a sort of luminous glow of its own. Perhaps another of natures beauty yet accidentally too beautiful; rare and unique.

Soft delicate shape, each detail perfected. Each curve seemed as smooth as silk. Every movement immaculately done. Sun rays shining off like almost as if a sun in itself. The sound striking to any ear. The colour was extremely white and shining, enough to replace a moon in the night.

Her thick hair waved in the wind as if trying to fly. Her lips carved perfectly onto her face with in just the right position; brightly pink coloured. Her cheek bones outstanding and rosy red. Her small delicate nose fitted accurately with everything else. Her smile outshone a lamp in a dark room and brought warmth to the atmosphere. Her enormous dazzling eyes clearly the key features of her face could leave anyone speechless for days on hold.

Her subtle footsteps made no sound at all. Her hands waved freely in the air, each nail glimmering boldly. I stood there, my gaze fixed upon her eyes unable to move, un-wanting to move. She was moving towards me. Adrenaline started to build up. Tension was rising. She didn't say word. She stopped in front of me and I waited for something, anything. It was a worthwhile wait as I soon realised. Something lifted me off the floor and into the air. A sensational feeling, one I'd never experienced before and I knew I never would again. I closed my eyes and let my self drown slowly into the fact her lips were fixed upon mine.

Sorry I'm Late? :$

Track 5, Shoot Out

He landed steadily, comfortably and without a sound. The parachute folded easily back into its bag and he left it there next to the wall behind a large metal crate. Footsteps in the distance were getting quickly closer and without any hesitation he was in the shadows once again. The door was close by just up the corridor near 20 yards.

Suddenly a stampede of hooves at high speed. This was his chance. The unicorns came to a halt outside the Large Sky Fortress's only entrance. Once it was opened Alex lashed out from the shadows and down the corridor at full speed, he wasn't going to make it. The gate was near closing, he jumped head first. Everything seemed slow motion, it was now or never as soon as the gate slammed down, the lasers were out.

The first few shots were easy, he always had an eagle eye. He spun on his heals and slid across the floor on his side fingers at a ready. As soon as the next few targets were in sight it didn't take him long to take them out too. The next lot came running from the right, with heavy armor and machine lasers. Alex knew there was no where to run but up, it took him one nano grenade to take out the front line of the soldiers and one smoke bomb for him to quickly climb up into an air vent.

Summer Evening. Extremely Late.

(Girl and boy our of breath in desperate need of air at the same time frantically trying to open the door)

Mark: (impatiently) COME ON, WE DON'T HAVE TIME. OPEN THE GODDAMN DOOR WOMAN.

Stacey: (sobbing) I'M TRYING MARK, I'M TRYING.

Mark: OBVIOUSLY YOU'RE NOT TRYING HARD ENOUGH.

(Mark pushes away Stacey and snatches for the big bundle of keys and tries each one clumsily)

Mark: This is ridiculous, pathetic. (Looks behind him and all around) Useless girl, stop your crying you incompetent fish and HELP ME OUT?

Stacey: STOP SHOUTING AT ME... I DON'T LIKE IT WHEN YOU SHOUT.

Mark: Argh.... (looks at watch with a shocked look). OH FOR FUCK SAKE. LOOK AT WHAT YOU'VE GONE AND DONE NOW.... WE'VE MISSED DOCTOR WHO!... bloody door.

Jasmine: Ah finally took your time didn't you. Did you bring my paracetamol.

Aladdin: Yes... i brought your bloody paracetamol and your hot water bottle and the rest of the rubbish.

Jasmine: Hey... There's a line. DON'T cross it. NONE OF THE STUFF is rubbish.

Aladdin: (sighs) Yes honey.

Jasmine: Right then, you can start with the ironing then do the dishes followed by the hoover and then i want you to clean up the bathroom, it's in a right mess.

Aladdin: O great, I come home after a long day at the carpet factory and you start bossing me around.

Jasmine: WHAT?

Aladdin: O nothing. Is that all honey?

Jasmine: Yes, then you can join me in bed.

Aladdin: Right. (half heatedly)

Ambitions

(Tom travels on his Daily routine to work on the tube with his girl friend arm in arm.)

Tom: Don't you ever get bored of life.

Shelly: Why would I?

Tom: Don't you ever feel like getting out of it... changing it?

Shelly: Never really thought of it so deeply, why?

Tom: I'm getting tired of life. I wanna do something which stands out...

Shelly: Ryt.....

Tom: I wanna die leaving a mark on this world... something I'd be remembered by, something which makes my life worth while.

Shelly: And how you propose to do that?...

Tom: I wanna life which leaves memories even after I'm gone

Shelly:...?

Tom: Life's short... and we're going to slow... we need to speed ourselves up a bit and catch up with the rest of the world... and maybe take the lead?

Shelly: Where are you trying to go with this speech?

Tom: Shelly, shut up.... and marry me.

(Shelly backs away, doors open)

Operator: 'This is the last stop'.

Shelly: Too fast Tom... too fast. Sorry.

(Shelly walks of tube leaving Tom to wonder on his own in the now empty tube.)

Lifes Twist [Redraft] Task 21

(A teenage boy lays in bed playing with his hair, staring at the blank ceiling in a room on the 6Th floor of a building. The lights out and the only light now is coming from the window.)

Hmm. I wonder if things could have turned out differently, if only I done something different earlier on. Dad wasn't as bad as mum makes him out to be now. I hate the way she talks about him sometimes, yes he was wrong but at least his intentions were good, he just wanted the best for everyone in his own way, whether he was wrong or right, too stubborn. Maybe I would have been better of staying with him, instead of running off with mum? Or maybe... maybe I shouldn't even be with any of them at all.

(A tear drops from his eye. He then gets up, paces around the room for a while and then slowly walks over to the window and rests forehead on the cold glass.)

Everything that happened went wrong all because of me. Because of me they split and now they're so far apart. Because of me everything changed. Nothing seems right no more, because of me. It seems the world would be a miles better place without me after all. But then again, I never really volunteered to be born. I Never asked to be in a family did I. I never asked to be given a body, or to have a life. Besides everything would be better off without me anyway, so what's the point. I might as well not bother with anything anymore. It's all useless.

(Slides balcony door open slowly and walks over to the edge, wind blowing steadily making his overgrown hair move about wildly.)

Hmm... I miss dad. I wonder where he's at now, what he's doing, if he remembers me even. I doubt he does. I wonder if I'll ever see him again. I hope he's OK and all that. I hope he's happy though. If only mum and dad just got along like the rest of the world, life would be so much easier for everyone. What ever I do goes wrong now. Everything I do is either useless, a failure or ends up completely negatively. Hmm, I'm obviously not needed here, nobody's gonna miss me when I'm gone then for sure. No ones gonna give a shit.

(Leans over balcony edge and falls to his death)

Task 19... A Love Story

I once ended a love so true and strong
It was a hot and sad summers night
There was a feel of something bad and wrong
And nothing of the day seemsto be right

And now there is this weird feeling inside
As if a guilt, harsh and dark forever
Our precious moments togather are few
And i will keep them few close like treasure
Night comes, night goes my thoughts of you just grow
I dream of eyes so bright and comforting
I know that now i love you, just to show
i do, i will ask you; "be my darling"
So please i beg of you to not decline
I do insist, accept my valentine?
