My Friends

I need my friends like the earth needs the sun,

I need my friends like a burger needs a bun,

I need my friends like a baseball player needs a home run,

And then the team win and they're all proud,

I love my friends as much as a child loves their toys,

I love my friends like girls love boys,

I love my friends as much as a party loves noise,

But then it gets too loud,

I need my friends like a market needs a stall,

I need my friends like supermodel needs to be tall,

I need my friends like a house needs a wall,

And some windows and a front door,

I want my friends like a bee wants a flower,

I want my friends like a villian wants power,

I want my friends like a begger wants a shower,

And be able to fall asleep without having to lye their on the floor,

Need,love and hate

I need you like Tom needs Jerry.
I need you like Woolwich needs a ferry.
I need you like a baby needs jelly
sweet and tasty good for a childs party.
Like a bird which needs a cage.
I need you like icecream needs a cone.
I need you like B.T needs a phone.
I need you like an old person needs to moan
to show he can get his own way.
Like potatoes need mud.
I need you like a bath needs foam.
Like vagrant needs a home.
Like a movie star needs a comb.
I need you.

I hate you like dogs hate cats.
I hate you like people hate bats.
I hate you like a footballer hates saturated fats,
burgers and chips won't help in the ninety minutes.
Like children hate vegetables.
I hate you like a book with no pages.
I hate you like a hard worker with low wages.
I hate you like animals in cages
nowhere to run about free.
Like old people hate computers.
I hate you like hope without a spark.
I hate you like an angry dogs bark.
I hate you like being left in the dark.
I hate you.

I love you like a man who loves 'burger king'
I love you like a bell with a loud ding.
I love you the way gollum loves the ring
with a simple my precious.
Like a child who loves sweets.
I love you like when a boy gets a dog.
I love you like when an athlete comes first in a jog.
I love you like a thick and dark fog
and I know that i'll always be searching for you.
Like a dog who loves a bone.
I love you like monkey loves a vine.
I love you when we go to dine.
I love you so much i know it will be fine.
I love you.

I need/want/miss/love you.

I need you like the flowers need rain,
I want you like an emo kid wants pain
Just for the attention and drama.
I need you like the stars need a sky,
I want you like an argument wants a lie
Just to strike back at good old karma.
I miss you like gravity would miss the earth,
I love you like a mother who has just given birth

I need you like a hole needs to be deep,
I want you like a frog wants to leap
So it doesnt stand out from the crowd.
I need you like a river needs a lake,
I want you like a fat kid wants cake
And isnt his pompous mother proud.
I miss you like a nightmare would miss its prey,
I love you like a needle loves to get lost in hay.

I need you like a cream needs dry skin,
I want you like an athlete wants to win
And doesnt even mind about getting caught cheating.
I need you like a parent needs control,
I want you, like a gambler on a roll
Who has forgotten about his terribly important meeting.
I miss you like two lovers that never met,
I love you like Romeo loved his Juliet.

Task 14: Simile Poem

Last time it was metaphors. And what an amazing collection you produced between you - with some of the most memorable lines of poetry I have ever read. Honestly.

Now let's see how you do with metaphor's slippery cousin: the SIMILE.

Once we've got over the basic spelling mistake many of you still make (this technique is NOT a SMILE!!!!!), there is much more to the simile than meets the eye...

My son, who is on the autistic spectrum, has always found similes easy. It is metaphors which have long confused him; he thinks of them as lies. If you write, for example, "Stress is a beast", this is nothing short of a lie. Stress is NOT a "beast"; it is a neuro-psychological reaction where the chemical balances in your body shift in response to an external or internal trigger or stimulus. Whereas a "beast" is a synonym for an animal (i.e. not a human).

A simile-reliant approach to this sentence is much more 'honest': "Stress is like a beast". Now there is something much harder to argue with. "Stress" and "beasts" share some subtle characteristics.

But I reckon it is the ease with which any of us can write a simile that can make so many similes pretty dull and ordinary. (Just as it is the challenge of writing a metaphor which, whilst much more difficult, makes for a much more special linguistic creation in the end.)

So the challenge this week is not just to write some similes - ANYONE can do that. The challenge this week is to write similes which are ORIGINAL and to write them in an original WAY.

To help you, I would like you to read the most recent Poem of the Week on the Fast Track BLOG. It is a poem by performance-poet (and Bard of Luton), John Hegley.

Read the poem several times, each time focusing on something different.

  1. Read it aloud, until you have rehearsed (and perfected) a performance of the poem. Do you notice anything interesting about the way he has written it?
  2. Now look at the similes: do you understand them all? Which are your favourite? Do they fall into different categories? Which of them are the most humorous? And the darkest?
  3. Next, look carefully at his use of rhyme. See if you can map out the rhyme scheme he uses. How easy do you find this? Look at how the rhyme scheme seems to shift every few lines, as one rhyme is lost within the middle of a word, whilst the end of the same word becomes the source of the next rhyme.
  4. Finally, look at the rhythm. See how he starts with a very simple, iambic pentameter (indeed that is the meter to which he returns several times throughout the poem). But notice how he deviates massively from this rhythm - in Line 3, and also in the respective lines about Arthur, Noddy and the "broadest bean" on the plate. And elsewhere he slips into a totally different rhythm altogether - like in the syllable-crowded 'calendar/colander' lines, or the syllable-sparse 'marrow/narrow' ones.
Now, hopefully, you have looked closely at the poem for all these things. Before you move on, read the poem aloud one final time - ideally to a friend or a family member - and really relish the performance itself.

Now Task 14. Your very own Simile Poem.

  1. Choose your verb: need; hate; love; want; or anything else you can think of really.
  2. Then think of a handful of similes, and use each as the starting point for a new section.
  3. Next, you can add some other, rhyming similes to each section to complete it.
  4. Now try playing with your rhyme and rhythm, looking at Hegley's poem for inspiration.
  5. If you wish, you can follow the same structure as my attempt below (but you don't have to, and it would be nice to see some of you experiment with your own form and structure):
  • Each stanza = 3 sets of 3 rhyming pentameters
  • There are two 'bridging' rhyming couplets between each section - each in tetrameters.
  • And I have 3 stanzas - one on need; one on want; and one on love.
The result: a simile poem which is anything but ordinary - and, above all, in which you play around and experiment to your heart's content with RHYTHM and with RHYME.

And if you're wondering if this is supposed to be a difficult task? Of course it is. This is wordvoodoo after all. (But remember I'm only too happy to help you with a first draft if you get really stuck.)

Deadline (for those of you interested in such things!) = midnight on Saturday 3rd November. :)

And, as always, here's my attempt:

I need you like a vagrant needs a bench
I need you like a soldier needs a trench
I need you like febreze requires a stench
so it can show how well it masks it
Like a corpse requires a casket
I need you like a creek needs a paddle
I need you like a horse needs a saddle
I need you like a jockey needs to straddle
so he can show how well he rides
Like seven brothers need some brides
I need you like a sewer needs faeces
Like a genus needs a species
Like an iron needs some creases
I need you.

I want you like the ostrich wants to fly
I want you like the scraper wants the sky
I want you like an onion wants to fry
So it can show how good it tastes
Like belts want waists
I want you like a sinner wants remorse
I want you like a cuckold wants divorce
I want you like a sperm wants intercourse
So it can show how well it swims
Like churches want hymns
I want you like an oven wants heat
I want you like a bone wants meat
I want you like the chaff wants the wheat
I want you.

I love you like a bully loves to hurt
I love you like Courtney Love loved Kurt
I love you like a hoover loves its dirt
So it can show how well it sucks
Like lakes love ducks
I love you like a library loves a book
I love you like a copper loves a crook
I love you like a salmon loves a hook
So it has something to avoid
Like a vacuum loves a void
I love you like a vintner loves a grape
I love you like a curtain loves to drape
I love you like my daughter loves sellotape
I love you

And I'll come back to this and try some more in due course...

Oh, and if you haven't done so already, have a listen to John Hegley performing his poem, 'Jesus Isn't Only For Christmas' by clicking here... :)

stress is

Stress is a vice that continues to tighten
Stress is a stain that refuses to lighten
Stress is a beast; always ready to frighten
Stress is …

Stress is a voice that’s relentlessly hounding
Stress is a black hole; there is no rebounding
Stress is a drum that is constantly pounding
Stress is ….

Stress is a burden; the weight on your shoulders
Stress is a file, way to massive for folders
Stress is a mountain with stampeding boulders
Stress is…

Stress is a word but for some it’s a sick curse
Stress is an illness and it only gets worse
Stress is a wound, one you surely cannot nurse
Stress is …

Stress is a nuisance; unwanted and painful
Stress is a force that is callous and baneful
Stress is the reason I’m blue (and that’s shameful!)
Stress is …

Task 13: Metaphor Poem

Firstly, well done to ALL of you who completed Task 12 on time. I felt privileged to read such an impressive body of work, and no one would have guessed the writers were from four different year groups either. Yet again, your work is being read by bloggers all over the world, and what they are reading is fantastic stuff. So well done to the lot of you!

And if you haven't read everyone else's efforts (and commented on them too) you don't know what you're missing! So get reading (and commenting) straight away...
______________________

Another poetry task this week.

Firstly, have a look at this week's Poem of the Week on the Fast Track BLOG. (Click here to read it.)

As you will see, this poem is a masterclass in metaphors - and, in fact, almost every line in the poem gives a different metaphor for the poem's topic: love.

Your task - as you've probably guessed already - is to write your own metaphor poem, using 'Love is...' to provide your structure.

Like that poem, yours too will follow these rules:
  1. Each stanza will consist of four lines. (You should write a minimum of 5 stanzas.)
  2. All four lines will begin with "???? is". (N.B. Insert the topic of YOUR poem where he has used the word LOVE.)
  3. The fourth line of each stanza will simply consist of those two words: i.e. "???? is."
  4. Lines 1-3 of each stanza will rhyme.
  5. Lines 1-3 of each stanza will be of a similar length. (Look carefully at the example below, and you will see how I stick to a similar rhythm too: see if you can manage the same.)
All of you should obey these five rules.

Some of you might choose to obey the following rule too:
  • The most observant of you will realise Lines 1-3 each have FOUR FEET (or BEATS). They are different types of feet, but there are still always four beats to the line. If you think you can manage this (and some of you should definitely be able to do so), make sure each of your Lines 1-3 have FOUR FEET too. (Ask me if you are stuck on this...)
Like Henri's poem, try to make yours as original and fresh as possible.

All you need to do first is choose your topic. Here are some ideas, but you don't have to choose one of them if you don't want to:
  • Friendship
  • Happiness
  • Football
  • School
  • Family
  • Freedom
  • Music
  • Nature
The choice of topic (and so title) is up to you. Just make sure you follow the rules above, and GOOD LUCK!

And remember: if you are stuck for a rhyme, use RHYMEZONE.COM.

Deadline = midnight on Saturday 20th October

As always, here is my attempt:

HOPE is a friend when all others desert you
Hope is a plaster when others have hurt you
Hope is a fact and won't need to convert you
Hope is...

Hope is a car that will never break down
Hope is a house in the posh part of town
Hope is a smile and never a frown
Hope is...

Hope is a suit with a perfect fit
Hope is a patch when you can't seem to quit
Hope is a serious piece of kit
Hope is...

Hope is a crutch when you can't seem to walk
Hope is an ear when you just need to talk
Hope is the flower, the leaves and the stalk
Hope is...

Hope is the meat on doubt's dubious bone
Hope is all ears and won't hang up the phone
Hope is immune to the toxic unknown
Hope is...

Debut version 2.0

He looked down at his shoes polished within an inch of perfection, which were soon to be ruined by the blood of terrorists,
unworthy of gracing the imported leather which gleamed with superiority.
"in the name of their god they systematically brought down the west."
This war with the "Its". He called it that.
He hesitated to think of any of them as midly human. Of course,
these weren't entirely his own concepts, the the colonel was a very charismatic man.
How else was he supposed to know about the situation,
he was barely on the seven twenty seven plane to basra.

Debut

She was scared; her first time. She sung her heart out to the huge crowds of Kent. Were they to like her songs? Her voice? HER? This was the first time they had come to see of such a young new soul. A soul that was to be let out soon. As soon as she was up on stage... She knew. She knew that this was to all blow off and she would be just great. But was this the case? As she sang her last song… She heard them clap. Was this it? The end had come… So soon?

debut

DEBUT
It was to happen. I was so scared; I could feel the nerves down my spine. I could hear the cheers. I walked to the stage and closed my eyes. Just then I cleared my throat.

i luv u :D

She closed her eyes. She knew that moment was to come; she knew exactly what he was going to do and say. He walked slowly but patiently towards her, thinking very carefully to what he was going to say. His cheeks were rosier than ever. All his nerves and emotions were dying to come out, but he knew he had to remain calm. He looked at her and just knew she was the one. His love, his life, his everything and now the only thing he had to do is ask her. Ask her if she would share his dreams of being one and being united. He finally reached up to her. She dreamily reopened her beautiful sparkling eyes. That’s when he said it. He told her. He knew it was the right time. He could tell because he could just visualise her gorgeous eyes telling him to say it.

As the cold lorry came to a halt I could detect the anxiety In the air, whilst exterior Belmarsh had just erupted into pandemonium as it was to apprehend some new violators, one of which was me, yeah, me, Remorseful little me along with the Soham murderer and Hannibal the cannibal both of which were belmarshes’ finest. They probably will never have a future, me on the other hand I did, you’ll have the universe at your feet my mother once said. And now as I prevail at the gates of Beelzebub’s playground, I can’t help but deduce what if.

It seemed an unfamiliar machine now that it had lost the two parts missing. I felt my heart, (bursting with excitement and fear) pounding. I heard the severe voice of my coach giving me my instructions. It seemed to me physically impossible however I had watched it being done by others. I climbed onto my vehicle and could see a difficult mission lay ahead. I positioned my foot to the pedal and off again, like a finger to a boiling kettle. When I finally controlled the monster for a few meters, I knew I had just ridden my first bike.

'Debut'

The moment arrived and like a storm, departed; but he forever remained the happiest person alive. His heart pounded; walking off the pitch. He felt intimidated yet very confident. His game play was sensational. He wasn’t knowledgeable of his precious skills. The crowd stood up. The passionate screams began. As a tear dribbled down his cheek. He looked at the vivid grey-blue sky, as his tear started to fly. He thanked his god for this somatic sensation and wished this moment lasted until his very last breath. Whilst walking away he established courage to say, “I’m very proud of myself!”

Debut

Everybody's rushing. There's screaming. Wires are purposely scattered everywhere. There's re-assurance too - everything's going to be alright, however, I cannot do anything. It's all a blur. I'm barricaded from all the excitement. So I let them persue their job and stare at the white-washed walls. Then there's a pause, followed by silence. The rushings stopped. The screamings finished. Wailing is introduced. Although it is faint, everyone's listening. The door to which all the commotion has occurred opens. A nurse steps out and I am invited in. And then I see it. A newborn. A baby. My new baby brother.

Debut

I gaze into your eyes perplexed by the cold callous emotion lurking within
You sigh then begin to murmur but stop.
The air between us is thick and heavy with unspoken tension,
I look fixedly into your eyes once again, trying to decipher the message that you refuse to deliver.
My eyes widen in shock because it is instantaneously clear.
I bow my head concealing the acrimonious tears that threaten to spill,
and as I break into a cold sweat, my blood painfully explodes through my arteries.
I feel my chest violently constrict,
And I know my heart is broken.

Debut

Words shall be embedded within a script, puppets at my doing.
What shall come of my enthralling narration? Trapped inside the weird locked depths of my mind.
Should my leading lady be swept away by my champion?
Or should my corrupt antihero be the sole lover?
I, surrounded by images moving and growing. Pacing themselves for this time; the prodigious or fearful termination that will come to them. Only through my grasp.
Here begins the story that shall entrust the thought of novelists surrounding me. Here begins the fathomless pit where nothing but my imagination and hand are at one.

Debut

She stared at his handsome face. The sparkling light in his eyes, were all that was needed to make her glow inside. Oh well, it wasn't the time to think because the step she chooses to take; will transform her life. It was literally now or never. He stands there like a golden treasure waiting to be found. Her heart racing, her mind is out of control and her body shivers from head to toes. She looked him in his eyes and told him the three special words from her heart. His tenderness touch made her world full of happiness, liveliness and cheerfulness. It was the moment of their lives.

Debut

The moment had now arrived. The princess in her flowing garment of white, the diamond tiara on her luscious curls and the bouquet in her clammy palms. Behind her was the king in his tuxedo, tears of happiness in his little eyes, the queen by his side wearing the same expression, staring at her daughter in glorification.

But it was okay for them. They lived a fairy tale marriage but she knew that she wasn’t going to commemorate their story. Only she knew the consequences of marrying this criminal. The criminal who murdered her lover. Her one and only, Romeo.

debut

pride and joy rush through me
but the task ahead leaves me numb
theres a first for everything i tell myself,
then the thought of my mum:
her striking voice rings through my body
a call i cannot answer
but the cheers of the lane make me
feel better a whole lot faster.
But this boy from leyton,a wonder kid?
or a little dreamer with bite
it dose not matter what i did
all that counts is tonight
so with the cockerel infront
and Mr Jol behind
i took my steps
into another life:
a life at the lane
